I made cottage pie last night for dinner, and if the lack of leftovers is any indication, it was a very good dinner. This is a simpler version than the traditional, however there is still a little prep work involved. I prefer to use instant potatoes, gravy, and canned or frozen vegetables.
By the way: According to most sources, if you use lamb, this is called Shepherd's Pie. If you use beef or any other meat, it is Cottage Pie.
1. Preheat your oven to 350 F.
2. First, make the mashed potatoes per the instructions:
- In a large pot, boil the water, adding a pinch of salt and perhaps butter to taste.
- When the water is at a rolling boil, remove from heat, pour in the milk, and then stir in the flakes.
- Keep stirring until nice and thick. Cover and set aside.
3. Brown the beef and sausage together. The sausage gives the meat a different texture as well as some extra flavor.
4. Make the gravy per the package instructions:
- Into a saucepan, add the contents of three gravy packets. Then whisk in the three cups of cold water.
- Turn the heat on to medium and keep stirring until the gravy thickens.
- As soon as it does, take it off of the heat and stir to a consistent thickness.
- Season the gravy to your taste.
5. Add the gravy to the meat. Stir to evenly mix.
6. Add the canned vegetables to the gravy and meat, again mixing until everything is well coated.
7. Pour this mixture into a 9x12 casserole dish.
8. Spoon the mashed potatoes into a layer on top of the meat filling.
9. Place the casserole into the oven and cook at 350 F for about 30 minutes.
